St Thomas, St. Croix, and St. John were acquired in 1917 (think World War I) from Denmark. The United States were interested in the territory as a defensive measure. They were purchased for a whopping $25 Million in Gold, or in equivalent terms for today, that is about $500 Million!
Every island has their own unique feeling and culture. Whether this is your first time or your fortieth, one thing that sets St. Thomas apart is their Good Morning. It is part of islander culture to always start of with a greeting. Depending upon the time of the day, you offer good morning, good afternoon, or good night. Yes, good night is used as a greeting on St. Thomas, not as a good bye. If you start by asking a question about business, you may get stopped by someone politely offering a Good Morning!
They are the only US territories where they drive on the left side of the road. During one visit, we asked the driver about this. He told us that at one point they tried to make that switch so everyone drove on the right side of the road. When the day came for the switch, not everyone got the message and accidents ensued. After that, they decided to just keep it the way it was and stay driving on the left side.
During your stay there you may notice trucks driving with a canopy and open air seating in the back. These are called Safari's and are an unofficial form of transportation. They cost $2 to ride and they go in a circle around the island. In the morning as everyone is trying to get to work on the outskirts of town, all the Safari's go in one direction around that circle. In the evening, they go in the other direction bringing workers back into the city.
Having a good time and being safe is very important. Several friends were approached by the officer with open containers of beer while sitting in their car. The officer suggested they might be ruining his lunch if they didn't put their seat belts on...yes, the officer was more concerned with the seat belt than the open alcohol. St Thomas wants to take great care of their visitors while having a great time.
In any case, enjoy the ocean like you've never before. They have amazing beaches and attractions through out the island of St Thomas.
